Chromium and Blood Sugar: What the Research Found and What 7 mcg in Hawaiian Harmony Means
Chromium is a trace mineral found in many foods. Adults aged 19-50 need about 25-35 mcg a day, and the Daily Value is 35 mcg (ODS, Chromium). One diabetes trial used 1,000 mcg a day, and effects on blood sugar were small and of unclear value. Hawaiian Harmony lists 7 mcg (20% DV). On insulin or diabetes pills? Ask your doctor first.

The basics
What is chromium, and why is it linked to blood sugar?
Chromium is a trace mineral. Your body needs only tiny amounts, measured in micrograms (mcg) (ODS, Chromium).
It shows up in small amounts in many foods, such as meats, whole grains, and some fruits and vegetables. Most people get some every day without thinking about it.
Researchers link chromium to blood sugar because it seems to help insulin do its work. Insulin acts like a key that lets sugar from your blood into your cells (CDC, Diabetes basics). If chromium helps that key turn, the idea goes, sugar could move out of the blood more easily.
That idea is why chromium appears in so many blood sugar supplements. The idea is not the same as proof, though. The trials, covered below, tell a more modest story.
A microgram is one thousandth of a milligram. So 7 mcg is 0.007 mg. Keep that scale in mind when you compare chromium with other ingredients. Our blood sugar basics page explains how insulin and glucose fit together.
Daily amounts
How much chromium do adults need each day?
Adults aged 19-50 need about 35 mcg a day (men) or 25 mcg a day (women). These are Adequate Intakes, and the Daily Value on labels is 35 mcg (ODS, Chromium).
| Amount | Chromium | 7 mcg as a share of it |
|---|---|---|
| Adequate Intake, men 19-50 | 35 mcg a day | 20% |
| Adequate Intake, women 19-50 | 25 mcg a day | 28% |
| Daily Value (used on labels) | 35 mcg | 20% |
| Hawaiian Harmony, per 1 ml | 7 mcg (as chromium picolinate) | 100% |
| One diabetes trial | 1,000 mcg a day | 0.7% |
An Adequate Intake is the amount experts think covers most healthy people. It is set when there is not enough data for a firmer target. The Daily Value is a single number used on all labels so shoppers can compare products.
Neither number is a treatment dose. They describe what a normal diet should supply, not what might change blood sugar.
The research
What did chromium trials find for blood sugar?
The effects were small, and their value for health was unclear. That is the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements summary of the research (ODS, Chromium).
Trials often tested amounts far above normal intake. One trial in people with diabetes gave 1,000 mcg a day. That is about 29 times the Daily Value.
Results also varied from study to study. Trials used different forms of chromium, different doses, and different groups of people. Some found a small drop in blood sugar. Others found little or no change.
A result can be real on paper yet too small to matter for your daily health. When experts call the value unclear, they mean the studies do not show that chromium changes the outcomes people care about.
The wider picture is similar. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says research has not proven herbal supplements effective for diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and supplements). Chromium is a mineral, not an herb, but the same caution about unproven products applies.
By the numbers
How does 7 mcg of chromium compare at a glance?
Medicines
Can chromium interact with insulin or diabetes medicines?
Yes, it might. Taken with insulin or other diabetes medicines, chromium might raise the risk of low blood sugar (ODS, Chromium).
The reason is simple. Both the medicine and the mineral may push blood sugar the same way. Together, the push could be larger than your care plan expects.
Talk to your doctor before you start any chromium product, including Hawaiian Harmony. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own. Keep checking your blood sugar the way your care team told you.
The amount matters too. The warning in the fact sheet is general, and the trials that tested chromium used far more than 7 mcg. Even so, your doctor knows your medicines and your numbers. Let them decide what is safe for you.
Our post on supplements and diabetes medicines covers the signs of low blood sugar and a checklist for that talk.
The label
What does 7 mcg of chromium in Hawaiian Harmony mean?
It means one daily dropperful gives 20% of the Daily Value for chromium. That is a normal, food-sized amount, not a trial-sized one.
The front of the bottle says "Advanced Blood Sugar Support". That is the label's wording, not a finding from a study. No trial of Hawaiian Harmony exists.
- Form: chromium picolinate, a common supplement form.
- Amount: 7 mcg per 1 ml serving, printed on its own line.
- Scale: about 1/143 of the 1,000 mcg used in one diabetes trial.
- Diet: your meals also supply chromium, so the label amount adds to that.
So the trial results should not be read onto this bottle. They tested a much larger amount, alone, in different people. See the full Hawaiian Harmony Supplement Facts for every line on the label.

The formula
What else in Hawaiian Harmony sits next to the chromium?
A 15.47 mg proprietary blend of 21 ingredients sits next to it. Single amounts are not printed, so only the chromium can be checked against research.
Chromium amount
7 mcg is printed on its own line. You can compare it with intake targets and trials, as this post does.
Blend amounts
Gymnema and ginseng are in the blend. Each is some share of 15.47 mg, far below amounts used in studies.
The finished product
No study has tested Hawaiian Harmony itself. Research on single ingredients does not transfer to the mix.
For a plain walk through the blend math, read what a proprietary blend hides. The ingredients page covers each of the 21 names.
Next step
What should you ask your doctor about chromium?
Ask whether chromium fits with your medicines and your blood sugar goals. Bring the bottle so they can read the exact amount.
Count all your chromium
Multivitamins often contain chromium too. Add up every product so your doctor sees the full daily total.
Name your diabetes medicines
Say which ones you take and at what times. Insulin and some pills carry a higher low blood sugar risk.
Ask what to watch for
Ask which readings or feelings should make you call. Write the answer down.
Agree on a check plan
Ask if you should check your blood sugar more often for a while. Follow the plan your doctor gives you.
Bottom line
Is chromium worth taking for blood sugar?
For most people, the evidence is too weak to say. Trials at high doses found small effects of unclear value, and the 7 mcg in Hawaiian Harmony is a food-sized amount.
What the label does well is state the chromium plainly. That lets you and your doctor judge it with real numbers. If you have diabetes, a supplement is an extra, never a stand-in for your treatment plan.
The sales page says to give the product 180-210 days to judge. That is the seller's suggestion, not a promise of any result. See side effects and interactions for the full safety picture.
